Doctors warn of depression risk for teens using Facebook
A group of doctors recently pointed out that social media such as Facebook carry particular risks for young people, especially if they already suffer from low self-esteem. That last point is particularly important. In the words of Dr. Megan Moreno -- as quoted in Lindsey Tanner's Associated Press article, "Docs warn about Facebook use and teen depression" -- it is not being suggested that Facebook "somehow infect(s) (our) kids with depression." Still, there are some unique risks that come with it -- and we're not only talking about cyber-bullying. Status updates and Facebook "walls" can sometimes cause major problems for young people who are either put down by or compare themselves unfavorably against their peers.
