OASAS Prevention Credentialing and Staff Requirements take effect in 2010
On September 26, 2008 OASAS issued a local services bulletin entitled "Prevention Credential and Staffing Requirements".
Here is the stated purpose of the bulletin:
The purpose of this Local Services Bulletin (LSB) is to outline the prevention credential and staffing requirements for Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) funded community and school-based prevention programs. While these new standards do not go into effect until July 2010, all funded prevention providers are encouraged to work toward and demonstrate compliance on a voluntary basis prior to the effective date.
The bulletin goes on to describe the procedure of personel with lapsed CPP and CPS credentials to get re-instated, and the requirements of agencies to have credentailed prevention supervisory staff and a percentage of credentialed prevention staff to meet licensing requlations for program operation by 2010.
GCASA has always been supportive of credentialing for prevention staff and has a number of staff with the credential such as Maryann Bowman, Shannon Ford, and Jim Morasco. Other staff are working toward their credential and GCASA fully supports them in their efforts.

Red Ribbon Walk - Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 1:00 PM
Our "Walk For A Drug-Free Community" is soon approaching and we need your support. It's my hope that we can have an even greater turnout for this event than last year. Please let me know if you plan on attending or if you'll be bringing a group so I can plan accordingly. The Walk is scheduled for Saturday, October 25th from 1:00 - 2:30 PM at the Batavia City Centre Mall.
There will be free water bottles to the first 200 people, red balloons and light refreshments provided afterwards. The Batavia Rotary Club will also be performing excerpts from Singin’ in the Rain prior to the walk down to GCASA. Hope to see you there on October 25th. Please see attached flyer for more details. Tip Line continues to grow across Western New York
GCASA teamed up with RAP, the Regional Action Phone, back in 2005 to create an Undersage Drinking Tip Line. The Tip Line spread from Genesee to Orleans to Monroe, and now to Erie and Cattarragus Counties.
People can call the Tip Line for information and to report underage drinking activities. So far this year, 2008, as of September 23rd, the Tip Line has handled 87 calls.
The Tip Line is described in an article in the Daily News on January 26th, 2007.

Drug Free Communities Coalitions uses Muckdogs Ball park to communicate substance abuse prevetion message
Paul Mrozek wrote an article published in The Daily News on 06/24/08 describing the work of the Drug Free Coalition, the Muckdogs, and the SADD chapter at Notre Dame. It's a great example of how, working todgether, we, as a community, can decrease the prevalence of substance abuse.

5th Annual Skate Jam in Medina NY on June 7th huge success
The fifth annual skate jam and community garage sale in Medina, NY last Saturday, June 7, 2008 was a huge success. Here is what Pat Crowley, GCASA's Assistant Director of Prevention in Orleans County had to say about it:
We had 250 parents, and youth attend this year- it was awesome. I looked over the surveys briefly that were filled out ( 164 youth, 37 adults )- thought it was interesting where they all came from- Alden, Lockport, Albion, Jeddo, Middleport, Basom, Batavia, Lyndonville, Holley, Kuckville, Rochester, Barker, Amherst, Knowlesville, Santa Rosa, Ca.; Huntsville, Ala.; St. Robert, Missouri; Florida and Medina.
